Petchitecture is the flagship fundraiser for Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS). The 2008 Petchitecture Goes Green event was held in San Francisco last Friday. This year, "Petchitects" - contributing local artists, designers, and architects - were asked to create unique pet habitats using sustainable resources or recycled materials. All proceeds from the event go to PAWS who, for over twenty years have worked to keep people living with HIV/AIDS, other disabling illnesses, and now seniors, together with their companion animals.

Top 3 Cat Boxes

I run my own pet care business and I do a lot of cat sitting so I've seen my share of litter boxes, believe me. Now, there is nothing wrong is an ordinary old rectangle box but if cleaning your cat's poop is something you dread then these three cat boxes may make the task a little more pleasant for you.

Omega Paw RA20 Self-Cleaning Litter Box
The name of it is a bit misleading - it's not exactly self-cleaning but it is easy to clean. I was amazed the first time I tried this. Just roll it all the way over onto it's top and back again, pull out the drawer and voila!

Litter Robot LRII Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box
This box on the other hand is self-cleaning. Okay, I'll admit I've never actually used this one and with a $300 price tag chances are I may never own one of my own but I do want one. Badly. This my friends is the Rolls Royce of litter boxes. I've heard horror stories about automatic litter boxes but the reviews on this one are almost all excellent.

Booda Cleanstep Dome Cat Box
This one I have used and I like it. I'm not convinced that the steps really make a huge difference in litter tracking but I do like the round shape for scooping, it's nice and roomy, it contains odor relatively well and it looks good!

Plushie your pet

Do you know how much it would cost to clone your pet? I don't know either but I know it's expensive. For $40~$70 you can have a custom pet portrait in 3D cuddly plush form! Cornflakegirl can create a custom plush toy in the likeness of your pet. You send in photos and she drafts patterns that match the colour markings of your pet. How cool is that? She can make plushies of all types of pets including dogs, cats, ferrets and chinchillas. You must check out her Etsy shop.

Cat scratch fever

It's true that your cat will scratch your furniture a lot less if you provide them with an alternative, so we definitely recommend getting a good scratching post or two. How about a wooden post on a square base covered in cheap carpet? Boooooring... Thankfully there are stylish alternatives including this new release from the Sophisticated Cat.

The bent plywood cat scratcher is made of 5/8" thick molded plywood and is covered in natural walnut veneer. For the carpet they use stylish and eco-friendly FLOR carpet tiles. We love how it can be used different ways such as hanging, leaning, or laying. No, it's not cheap but it sure is sweet.

Speaking of spring, my kitties are just itchin to get outside. Even though I have a fully fenced yard, my cats have been known to jump over, causing me to run around the neighbourhood like a maniac yelling their names. I only let them out fully supervised now but I think it would be nice if they could come and go as they pleased. The solution? The Cat's Den, outdoor enclosures. Awesome cat product alert! The Fling-ama-String is a battery operated cat toy that flings a string and entices the cat to play. It hangs on a doorknob, has two speeds, and is said to provoke even the laziest of cats! "Like having a purrsonal trainer for your cats" (groan). Watch the 1-minute video of cats playing with the toy. Funny!

Travelling with your pet

Ruby and I are off to visit family this weekend! We have a five hour drive each way and thankfully Ruby is excellent in the car, she basically just sleeps. Nonetheless her safety is very important to us. When she travels with us in the car we buckle her in with a harness and a Bamboo Quick Control leash with seatbelt latch.

Thepetcenter.com has excellent articles on traveling with your dog and your cat too. Cats don't tend to enjoy travelling very much however so I recommend leaving them at home and hiring a reliable pet sitter such as... Posh Moggy of course!
