Dogs like homemade holidays cookies too! Treat your pooch with these tasty and festive looking "corn-dy canes".

1 cup corn flour or finely ground corn meal
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
3 Tbs. honey
1/4 cup water
1 Tbs. oil
3 Tbs. finely grated raw beets

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Mix flours; add oil, water and honey. Mix well. Divide dough in two and add the raw beets to one half, mixing in well to color. Roll each half between your palms into 1/2 inch diameter log, and then twist the red and white logs together to make a striped cane. Roll the cane back and forth under your hands on a lightly floured board until it is 1/4 inch diameter. Cut to desired lengths and shape into small candy cane shapes. Transfer to lightly greased cookie sheet and bake until lightly golden and firm.

Yum!

Credit for this awesome recipe goes to North Shore Animal League - the world's largest no-kill shelter.

One of The Ruby Scoop's favourite blogs is about the life of a sweet 9 year old Boston Terrier named Buddy. Buddy was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma and is being cared for naturally under the guidance of an alternative veterinarian here in Ontario. We check in regularly to see how this sweet pooch is doing. If you have a dog recently diagnosed or living with cancer, you'll get a lot of good tips on natural treatment and proper diet. If you love dogs, you'll fall in love with this brave Boston and his compassionate and devoted mama Joanne. Ruby and I hope to meet him in real life one day!

Mine is. We've tried many diets for Ruby including vegetarian , raw, muffins, you name it. We've tried countless kibbles and she's turned them all down except for Orijen - 6 fresh Fish and she turns her nose on that one frequently now. To keep her interested I would top off the kibble with a variety of high quality, presumably delicious, canned foods, in particular Merrick canned. But lately she's been fussy about that too. Spoiled pooch! I can tell you though that there is one thing that Ruby will devour every time... Tripett. Yes, green tripe. Yes, it's stinky and gross but she just loves the stuff.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you have a fussy dog:

Dogs should be fed once, or two small meals a day beyond puppyhood, not more. Feeding your dog too frequently when he is older can make him appear fussy, when in fact he is just full.

Feeding your dog too regularly can get him into the routine of expecting to eat at those times and may lead to weight gain. Letting him get hungry then feeding sensibly will not harm him. In the wild, dogs would eat once a day until they were completely full.

Don't stand and stare at your dog waiting for him to eat. He will likely think something is wrong or something else is coming and won't eat.

Don't give in to your dog and give him something else straight away if he refuses his meal. You want to train him, not the other way around!

There's nothing wrong with feeding your dog a varied diet but don't keep changing the food because he seems fussy and won't eat it. Make sure nothing is wrong with him physically first, then if he is healthy, take charge of the situation. Put his food down, leave him to it, then 30 minutes later go and check to see whether it's been eaten. If it hasn't, take it away, then at the end of the day put down some fresh food. Repeat the process, and take it away 30 minutes later if it still isn't eaten. This way you'll train your dog to eat his food, and not reinforce his fussy behaviour.

Some dogs do actually prefer a certain type of food, just as people do. Try your dog with a variety of foods, and if he only eats one type, and will starve himself if he doesn't get it, the best solution can simply be to feed him that type of food.

If your dog suddenly goes off his food, it could be because he has dental problems, or a stomach problem. Get him checked out by the vet.

Give it time and be patient... and good luck!
