The Meals on Wheels program isn't just for people anymore. Low income seniors who already use Meals on Wheels also find it hard to keep up with the cost of feeding their beloved pets. Some humane societies in the US are donating pet food to the program.
According to the Meals on Wheels Director at Amherst Senior Center, Ferne Finger, the Meals for Pets program was started about six weeks ago. The seniors who are receiving food through this program are on very fixed income, so before this program started, it was very tough to afford food for their pets, let alone themselves.
This is such a great idea. Pets are often the main source of daily social contact and companionship for many seniors. Let's hope this becomes a trend all over the US and into Canada as well.
